Lovely to spot the Tall Ships Youth Trust (formerly the Sail Training Association)’s Brig, Stavros S. Niarchos, at the Pier Head last night.
11 years ago, I was lucky enough to sail on one of her predecessors, Sir Winston Churchill, from Hull to London, via Amsterdam and Ipswich. I loved that voyage so much and ours was the last time that their fleet at the time would sail into port together.
My watch (Mizzen) had the tallest mast and highest sail then in British waters.
The Mighty Churchill, as she became known during our voyage, sailed down the Thames in mock battle with Malcolm Miller, passing through Tower Bridge at rush hour, stopping traffic across London. We docked next to HMS Belfast.
Malcolm Miller and Sir Winston Churchill were replaced a few months after our voyage. Malcolm Miller was gutted by fire in 2008, and was last spotted moored to a buoy in Falmouth, without her masts. Sir Winston Churchill is still used for training.
